When Should Your Book Your Newborn Session? (And When Should It Actually Take Place?)

If you're expecting a baby, you've probably discovered that there are a million things to plan before your little one arrives. Somewhere between choosing a pediatrician, washing tiny sleepers, and packing your hospital bag, you may start wondering, “When am I supposed to book newborn photos?”

The short answer? Book early, but don’t panic if you haven’t.

As an Austin newborn photographer, I work with families who reserve their session months in advance and families who call me after their baby has already arrived. Both scenarios are completely normal. If you're just beginning your search, you can learn more about the newborn experience and what types of sessions are available on my newborn photography page.

Booking Your Session vs. Scheduling Your Session

One thing that often causes confusion is that booking and scheduling are two completely different things. Booking simply means reserving your spot with your photographer. Scheduling is choosing the actual date your session will take place after your baby arrives. Understanding the difference can help take a lot of pressure off during those final weeks of pregnancy.

When Should You Book Your Newborn Photographer?

Ideally, you should book your newborn photographer around the beginning of your third trimester (around 28–32 weeks pregnant). Most newborn photographers only accept a limited number of newborns each month so they can maintain flexibility when babies decide to arrive on their own timeline. Booking during the third trimester gives you the best chance of securing availability around your due date.

However, life happens. Many first-time moms don't realize newborn photography needs to be booked ahead of time. Others simply have so much going on that it slips their mind. If your baby is already here, please don't assume you've missed your chance. I regularly accommodate last-minute newborn bookings whenever my schedule allows. Even if your baby is a few weeks old, it's always worth reaching out. The worst thing that can happen is that your photographer isn't available. If there's room on the calendar, you'll still walk away with meaningful images that help you remember just how tiny your baby once was.

When Should a Studio Newborn Session Take Place?

For traditional posed studio newborn sessions, the sweet spot is usuallybetween 2 and 3 weeks old. During this stage, babies are often still sleepy and naturally curl into those adorable squishy poses parents love. That doesn't mean older babies can't be photographed. I've photographed many babies outside this window with beautiful results. The key is simply having realistic expectations. As babies get older, they tend to:

  • Stay awake for longer periods

  • Stretch out more instead of curling naturally

  • Become more aware of their surroundings

  • Be less likely to settle into certain posed setups

This doesn't mean your session won't be successful. It just means the images may look a little different than those of a very sleepy two-week-old. Wide eyes, little stretches, and curious expressions can make for some incredibly sweet portraits.

The Growth Spurt Nobody Warns You About

If possible, I recommend avoiding scheduling your studio session between 7 and 10 days old. Why? Many babies experience a growth spurt around this time, which can lead to:

  • Cluster feeding

  • Increased fussiness

  • Shorter sleep stretches

  • Difficulty settling

As a newborn photographer, I've learned that day 10 tends to be my most unpredictable day for sessions. It's not impossible, but if I can avoid it, I usually do. Another growth spurt often occurs somewhere between 2 and 3 weeks old. This one can be harder to pinpoint, but it's helpful to know that if your baby seems fussier than usual, it may simply be developmental. The good news is that newborn photographers are used to this. If you're curious about some of the techniques I use to help babies settle during their session, you can read more about how I soothe babies during newborn sessions.

Can You Still Do Newborn Photos After 3 Weeks?

Please don't let an "ideal age" stop you from scheduling a session. While the classic sleepy newborn look becomes less predictable as babies get older, beautiful portraits are still absolutely possible. I've photographed babies who were several weeks old, and some of my favorite images have come from these sessions. Every baby is different. The goal isn't perfection. It's preserving the tiny details that are so easy to forget as the months pass.

When Should Lifestyle Newborn Sessions Take Place?

Lifestyle newborn sessions offer much more flexibility. Unlike posed studio sessions, lifestyle sessions focus on the connection between your family and your baby rather than sleepy poses. Because of that, there really isn't a wrong time to schedule one.

If you schedule between 1–3 weeks old:

You'll document all of those fresh newborn details:

  • Tiny fingers and toes

  • Sleepy snuggles

  • The feeling of bringing your baby home for the first time

If you wait longer:

That's perfectly okay too. Many moms don't feel physically or emotionally ready for photos during those first couple of weeks. You may be recovering from delivery, adjusting to life with a newborn, or simply trying to survive on very little sleep. Lifestyle sessions can beautifully capture:

  • Feeding your baby

  • Rocking them to sleep

  • Snuggling together on the couch

  • Siblings interacting naturally

  • The connection between your growing family

The baby doesn't need to sleep. The house doesn't need to be perfect. You just need to be ready.

What Happens If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?

This is one of the biggest reasons newborn photographers book based on due dates rather than exact session dates. Once your baby arrives, you'll simply reach out to finalize your session date. Whether your little one makes an early entrance or decides to keep everyone waiting, your photographer will adjust accordingly.

What About Preemie Babies?

If your baby arrives early, please don't worry about trying to fit into a specific newborn photography timeline. For premature babies, we typically schedule their session based on their adjusted age rather than their actual birth date. Adjusted age simply means calculating your baby's age based on their original due date instead of the day they were born. For example, if your baby arrived four weeks early and is six weeks old chronologically, their adjusted age would be closer to two weeks old. This often gives us a better idea of what to expect during the session in terms of sleepiness, flexibility, and feeding patterns. That said, every preemie baby is unique. The most important factor is making sure your baby is home, healthy, and that you feel ready. Sometimes that means scheduling shortly after discharge from the NICU, and other times it means waiting a little longer. Whatever your baby's story looks like, we will create a session that works for them.

Whether they're tiny and sleepy or wide awake and curious, their journey deserves to be documented and celebrated. Preemie babies are incredibly strong, and it is always an honor to capture this chapter for their families.

The Most Important Thing to Remember

The "perfect" timeline isn't nearly as important as making sure these memories are documented. Book early if you can. Reach out late if you need to. Choose the type of session that feels right for your family. Because one day, you'll look back at these images and realize that what mattered most wasn't whether your baby was exactly 14 days old. It was that you remembered.
