Austin In-Home Newborn Photographer

Real Moments. Real connection. The comfort of home.

It’s More Than Just Newborn Photos

Lifestyle newborn sessions are about more than documenting what your baby looked like during those first few weeks. They're about preserving the feeling of being home together. The nursery you spent months preparing. The way your baby fits perfectly in your arms. Tiny stretches on your bed, cuddles on the couch, and the everyday moments that already feel like they're passing too quickly. Unlike a studio session, lifestyle newborn photography focuses less on posing and more on connection. The result is a collection of images that feels personal, relaxed, and uniquely yours.

Preserve the Story of This Season

Your home becomes part of your family's story. From the nursery to the living room where countless feedings and cuddles happen, these spaces hold memories you'll want to remember long after your baby has grown.

Focus on Connection

Lifestyle sessions are centered around the relationships that matter most. Parents, siblings, and even pets can naturally be included as we document genuine interactions rather than heavily posed portraits.

Relax in the Comfort of Home

There's no need to pack up the entire family or worry about leaving the house with a newborn. Sessions take place in your own environment, allowing everyone to settle in and simply enjoy time together.

Studio vs. Lifestyle Newborn Photography: Which Is Right for You?

One of the most common questions parents ask is whether they should choose a studio newborn session or an in-home lifestyle session. The answer depends less on where the photos are taken and more on the type of images you want to remember.

Studio Newborn Sessions

Studio newborn sessions are focused on the baby. Using professional studio lighting, wraps, props, and carefully posed setups, the goal is to create polished portraits that highlight every tiny detail.

These sessions typically include:

  • Posed newborn portraits

  • Studio lighting and controlled conditions

  • Props, wraps, headbands, and styling

  • Sleeping baby poses

  • Family and sibling portraits on simple backdrops

If you're drawn to classic newborn portraits and artistic posed images, a studio session is likely the best fit. You can see an example of a studio newborn session in A Simple, Neutral Newborn Session With Parents.

In-Home Lifestyle Newborn Sessions

Lifestyle newborn photography takes a different approach. Rather than focusing on posed portraits, the emphasis is on connection, interaction, and documenting your family's real life during those first few weeks at home.

These sessions often include:

  • Family cuddles on the couch or bed

  • Time spent in the nursery

  • Feeding, soothing, and everyday interactions

  • Natural window light

  • Relaxed, baby-led moments

While I'll offer gentle direction throughout the session, the goal is to create images that feel authentic and personal rather than heavily posed. You can learn more about what to expect during a lifestyle newborn session in What to Expect at Your In-Home Newborn Session.

Not Sure Which One to Choose?

Both styles beautifully document your baby's first days, but they tell different stories.

A studio session focuses on creating timeless portraits of your baby.

A lifestyle session focuses on preserving what life felt like when your baby first came home.

If you're still deciding, I recommend reading Should I Do a Home or Studio Newborn Session? for a more detailed comparison of both experiences.

Fresh 48 Sessions: The Very Beginning

Some moments simply can't be recreated later. Fresh 48 sessions take place within the first two days after birth, usually at the hospital, birth center, or your postpartum recovery room. Rather than focusing on posed portraits, these sessions document the tiny details and emotions that disappear almost as quickly as they arrive. The wrinkly newborn skin. Hospital bracelets. Tiny fingers wrapped around yours. Proud siblings meeting the baby for the first time. Those first hours together as a family. Because babies change so quickly, Fresh 48 sessions preserve a chapter that lasts only a matter of days.

What Makes a Fresh 48 Different?

While both Fresh 48 and lifestyle newborn sessions focus on genuine moments and connection, they tell different parts of your family's story. Many families choose one or the other, while some choose both to tell a more complete story of their baby's arrival.

Lifestyle Newborn Sessions

  • Typically photographed within the first few weeks at home

  • Take place in your home using natural light

  • Include the nursery and your family's daily environment

  • Focus on connection, cuddles, and settling into life with your newborn

Fresh 48 Sessions

  • Photographed within the first 24-48 hours after birth

  • Take place at the hospital, birth center, or recovery room

  • Document baby's earliest details and first family interactions

  • No props, posing, or elaborate setups

A Relaxed, Documentary Approach

Fresh 48 sessions are intentionally simple. There's no need to worry about cleaning, styling a nursery, or preparing your home. I'll gently guide you when needed, but most of the session focuses on documenting real interactions as they unfold naturally.

The goal isn't perfection. The goal is remembering.

How an In-Home Newborn Session Works

One of the biggest advantages of lifestyle newborn photography is how simple it is for new parents. There's no need to pack a diaper bag, load the car, or worry about leaving the house with a newborn. I'll come to you and guide you through the entire process.

Step 1: We'll Choose the Best Rooms

When I arrive, I'll take a quick look around your home to find the areas with the best natural light. Most sessions take place in just three locations:

  • The nursery

  • The primary bedroom

  • The living room

You don't need a magazine-worthy home or huge windows in every room. I'm simply looking for bright, comfortable spaces where your family naturally spends time together.

Step 2: We’ll Keep Baby Comfortable

Lifestyle sessions are completely baby-led. There's no expectation that your baby will sleep through the session or pose in specific ways. A full feeding shortly before I arrive is always helpful, but don't worry if your baby's schedule doesn't line up perfectly. We'll take breaks as needed for feeding, diaper changes, cuddles, and soothing. The goal isn't a perfectly cooperative baby. The goal is a happy, comfortable one.

Step 3: We'll Focus on Connection

Rather than posing everyone in formal positions, I'll gently guide your family into natural interactions. We'll capture:

  • Parents holding and cuddling baby

  • Siblings interacting with their new brother or sister

  • Quiet moments in the nursery

  • Tiny details like fingers, toes, eyelashes, and nursery details

  • The everyday moments you'll want to remember years from now

Most families tell me they're surprised by how relaxed the experience feels.

Step 4: We’ll Enjoy the Moment

Many parents worry they'll need to know how to pose or act for photos. You don't. My job is to guide you while keeping the session feeling natural and comfortable. There will be plenty of opportunities for everyone to simply slow down, cuddle their baby, and enjoy being together. The result is a gallery filled with genuine moments that reflect what life looked and felt like during those fleeting newborn weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to some of the questions parents ask most often before booking an in-home lifestyle. If you don't see your question here, feel free to reach out - I'm always happy to help.

What's the difference between a studio and lifestyle newborn session?

The biggest difference isn't where the session takes place, it's the type of images we create. Studio newborn sessions focus on posed portraits using professional lighting, wraps, props, and carefully styled setups. Lifestyle newborn sessions focus on connection, interaction, and documenting your family's real life at home using natural window light. Both are beautiful ways to preserve the newborn stage, but they tell very different stories. If you're still deciding which style is right for your family, I recommend reading Should I Do a Home or Studio Newborn Session?

Do I need to clean my entire house before the session?

Not at all. Most lifestyle newborn sessions take place in just three areas of your home:

  • The nursery

  • The living room

  • The primary bedroom

I recommend straightening up the spaces you want photographed, making the bed, clearing off nightstands, and tidying visible surfaces. There's no need to deep clean your entire home or prepare it for visitors. Trust me, new parents have enough on their plates already.

What should we wear for our lifestyle newborn session?

Comfortable, well-fitted clothing is always a great choice. Neutral tones tend to photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your family rather than your clothing. When planning outfits, think coordinating rather than matching. For babies, simple is often best. A plain white, cream, or neutral-colored onesie photographs beautifully and allows us to capture all those tiny newborn details. My general advice is to think:
"Show off the baby, not the outfit." Of course, I'm always happy to incorporate meaningful heirloom pieces or sentimental items that are important to your family.

Can parents and siblings be included?

Absolutely. Lifestyle newborn photography is designed to document your family's connection with your new baby. Parents and siblings are encouraged to participate throughout the session. Immediate family members living in the household are always welcome to be included.

What time of day is best for an in-home newborn session?

For the best natural light, I typically schedule sessions between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. This is usually when homes have the brightest, most consistent window light, allowing us to create light-filled, natural images throughout the session.

Does my baby need to be asleep?

No. Unlike a posed studio newborn session, lifestyle sessions don't require your baby to sleep through the entire session. Awake babies can be just as beautiful to photograph as sleepy ones. The most important thing is that your baby is comfortable and content. A full feeding shortly before I arrive is often helpful, but don't stress if your baby's schedule doesn't line up perfectly. We'll work around their needs and take breaks whenever necessary.

What is a Fresh 48 session?

A Fresh 48 session takes place within the first 24-48 hours after your baby's birth, usually at the hospital, birth center, or postpartum recovery room. These sessions focus on documenting your baby's earliest details and your family's first moments together before you head home. Fresh 48 sessions are unposed, natural, and focused on preserving memories exactly as they happened.

How far do you travel?

Lifestyle newborn sessions include travel within 15 miles of my Austin studio. Homes located outside that area may be subject to an additional travel fee. If you're unsure whether you're within my service area, feel free to reach out and ask.

What if my home doesn't get a lot of natural light?

Don't worry. Most families assume their home won't work for lifestyle newborn photography, but I'm often able to create beautiful images with far less light than parents expect. When I arrive, I'll identify the rooms with the best available light and guide the session accordingly.

How old should my baby be for an in-home newborn session?

Most families schedule their lifestyle newborn session within the first two to six weeks after birth. Unlike posed studio newborn photography, lifestyle sessions aren't tied to a specific age window, which gives families a little more flexibility when scheduling.

What if I want posed newborn portraits but don't want to leave home?

I offer a premium option that allows me to bring the studio to you. This service combines the convenience of staying home with the polished look of a studio newborn session, including professional lighting, wraps, props, and posed newborn portraits. You can find details and pricing on my Pricing page.

When should I book my newborn session?

The best time to reserve your session is during your second or third trimester. We'll use your due date as a placeholder on my calendar and finalize the exact session date once your baby arrives.

These Days Won't Last Forever

The newborn stage is a blur of tiny details, sleepy cuddles, and moments that often pass before you've had time to fully take them in. Whether you choose an in-home lifestyle session or a Fresh 48 session, the goal is the same: to preserve this chapter exactly as it feels right now. The connection, the emotion, and the little moments that will someday become your favorite memories.

Ready to Preserve the Moments That Matter Most?

Whether you're welcoming your first baby or adding another little one to your family, I'd love to help you document this season in a way that feels natural, meaningful, and uniquely yours.
