A Relaxed Newborn Session with Parents (And What You Can Expect)
Some parents come into their newborn session a little unsure of what to expect… especially when they’re planning to be in the photos too. Do you need to be “on” the whole time? What if the baby is fussy? Is it going to feel stressful?
The short answer: not at all. A newborn session with parents is designed to feel calm, flexible, and honestly… a little bit like a break.
The First Part of Your Session Is for Baby (and for You to Relax)
When you arrive at the studio, we don’t jump straight into family photos. We start with baby. This part of the session usually lasts the longest, and it’s intentionally very low-pressure for parents. While I’m working through the first setups, you can settle in on the couch, have a cup of coffee, scroll your phone, or even take a much-needed nap. Yes, really. 😊 Most sessions take around two hours, but I always leave room for up to three if baby needs extra time. Feeding breaks, soothing, and slowing things down are all part of the process. Nothing is rushed.
We Start with Wrapped Poses (Because They Work)
The session begins with wrapped setups to help your baby feel secure and fall into a deep sleep.
Wrapped poses are not only cozy and beautiful, they also help us ease into the session gently. Babies tend to settle more easily this way, which sets the tone for everything that follows.
Then We Move into Props (Yes, Even Cheeseheads 🧀)
Once baby is nice and sleepy, we transition into a few styled setups. This is where you’ll see things like baskets, beds, or simple props that add a little personality without overwhelming the image.
Any Cheeseheads in the house? 😁 This family brought along their Green Bay pride, and I’m never going to say no to a tiny baby in a cheesehead.
These setups are always optional, but they’re a fun way to include something meaningful to your family.
Simple Table Poses (Where the Tiny Details Shine)
After props, we move into more minimal, classic poses on the table. This is where the focus shifts completely to your baby - those little fingers, sleepy expressions, and all the tiny details that change so quickly.
These images tend to feel timeless and are often the ones parents come back to again and again.
Parent Photos Happen at the End (And They’re Easier Than You Think)
At this point, baby is either sound asleep OR ready for a snack break. Once baby is fully settled again we finish with the parent images. By this point, everything feels more relaxed. Baby is sleepy, you’ve had time to settle in, and there’s no pressure.
You don’t need to know how to pose or what to do with your hands. I guide you through everything in a way that feels natural and comfortable, so the focus stays on connection, not perfection.
It’s Meant to Feel Calm, Not Complicated
If there’s one thing I want parents to take away before their session, it’s this: You don’t have to perform. You don’t have to rush. And you definitely don’t need a perfectly behaved baby. Everything about the session is built around keeping your baby comfortable and giving you space to just be present.
