The first year is full of changes. One day they're curled up like a newborn, and before you know it they're smiling, sitting independently, taking their first steps, and celebrating their first birthday. Every stage brings something new, and every stage seems to pass a little faster than the last.
Milestone sessions are designed to capture those moments in between. The gummy smiles, chubby cheeks, tiny fingers, curious expressions, and emerging personalities that make this time so memorable.
Most milestone sessions take place during a baby's first year, especially around tummy time, sitting, and first birthdays. But milestone photography doesn't have to stop there. Children continue to grow and change long after their first birthday, and every age brings new interests, personalities, and accomplishments worth remembering.
No matter the age or occasion, the goal is the same: preserving the details you'll never want to forget.

No two milestone sessions look exactly alike. Some parents love simple, classic portraits. Others choose bright colors, sports themes, birthday celebrations, or something completely unique.

Milestone sessions aren't just about the child. Parents, siblings, and immediate family members are always welcome to participate. Most families choose one backdrop for family portraits before moving on to individual images of the child, but every session is flexible. Whether you're celebrating one child or documenting multiple siblings together, we'll create a plan that works for your family.
Client Closet & Styling
For babies up to one year old, you're welcome to borrow from my client closet. I have a collection of outfits that photograph beautifully and coordinate well with many of my backdrops and setups.
Most parents choose to bring their own outfits, and that's perfectly fine too. Simple, well-fitting clothing tends to photograph best because it keeps the focus on your child's expressions and personality. Rompers, classic dresses, overalls, and timeless pieces are always great choices. That said, if you've been saving a special birthday outfit, fancy dress, or tiny suit, bring it along! We'll create a session that feels like your child.
Before your session, we'll discuss outfit options, backdrop choices, and the overall look you'd like to achieve so everything comes together seamlessly.

My Grow With Me program is designed for families who want to document each stage of their baby's incredible first year. Instead of choosing just one milestone, you'll capture three of the biggest moments:

What is a milestone session?
A milestone session is a photography session designed to capture important stages in your child's growth and development. Popular milestones include tummy time, sitting independently, first birthdays, and annual birthday portraits, but milestone sessions can be scheduled at any age or for any special occasion.
When should I schedule a milestone photography session?
Milestone sessions can be scheduled at any age, but some of the most popular ages are tummy time (around 3-5 months), sitter sessions (around 7-8 months), and first birthday celebrations. Many families also return each year for birthday portraits and other special milestones.
What age is best for a sitter session?
For the greatest variety of poses and prop options, I recommend waiting until your baby can sit steadily without assistance. This is typically around 7-8 months of age, although every child develops at their own pace. If your baby isn't sitting independently yet, we can still create beautiful images, but our posing options may be more limited.
What if my baby doesn't cooperate?
Babies and toddlers don't always arrive in a photo-ready mood, and that's completely normal. Over the years, I've learned plenty of tricks to encourage smiles, engagement, and cooperation, and we'll try every tool in our toolbox before giving up. In the rare event that your child is having a rough day and nothing is working, we'll work together to find a solution.

How long does a milestone session take?
Most milestone sessions last between 45 minutes and one hour. This gives us plenty of time for outfit changes, backdrop changes, snack breaks, family photos, and a little extra time for children who need to warm up to the camera.
When is the best time of day to schedule?
For most children, the ideal time is about one to two hours after a regular nap. Wake up, have a snack, and head to the studio. That said, you know your child best. If they're happiest in the afternoon or more cooperative in the morning, we'll schedule around that. I recommend avoiding nap times, days immediately following vaccinations, or times when your child isn't feeling their best.
What should my child wear?
Simple, comfortable, well-fitting outfits tend to photograph best because they keep the focus on your child's expressions and personality. We'll create a session that fits your style.
Do you provide outfits?
Yes. I have a client closet available for babies up to one year old. Most parents choose to bring their own outfits, but you're welcome to borrow from my collection as well.
Can parents and siblings be included?
Absolutely. Parents, siblings, and immediate family members are welcome to participate in milestone sessions. Most families choose one backdrop for family portraits and then use the remaining setups for individual images of the child, but every session is customized to fit your family's goals.
Can milestone sessions be themed?
While milestone sessions are typically simpler than a cake smash, there is still plenty of room to incorporate your child's interests and personality. With hundreds of backdrops, props, and styling options available, we can create anything from a classic portrait session to something more playful and unique. The focus is always on your child, so we generally avoid overly elaborate setups that distract from the reason we're celebrating in the first place.
Can I bring sentimental items or special props?
Yes! Heirloom blankets, birthday crowns, favorite books, stuffed animals, and other meaningful items can make wonderful additions to your session. One thing I don't usually recommend is bringing a favorite toy specifically to get your child's attention. It often has the opposite effect. Children either become completely focused on the toy or get upset because they want to play with it instead of taking photos.
What's the difference between a milestone session and a cake smash?
Milestone sessions focus on your child's current stage, personality, and growth using a variety of backdrops, outfits, and props. Cake smash sessions are more of an event and are designed specifically to celebrate a first birthday and typically include portraits, cake smashing, and clean up/splashing in an adorable little tub.
What happens if my child is sick on the day of the session?
Please contact me as soon as possible. I maintain a strict illness policy to protect all of the families who visit my studio, especially newborns and young babies. I am always happy to reschedule when someone is sick, and there is no additional fee for doing so. The goal is to create beautiful images, and that happens much more easily when everyone is feeling their best.
Do you offer a package for multiple sessions during the first year?
Yes! My Grow With Me program includes a Tummy Time session, a Sitter session, and a Cake Smash session, allowing you to document your baby's entire first year while saving $250 compared to booking each session individually.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes! Well-behaved family pets are welcome to participate in milestone sessions. Please let me know ahead of time so we can plan accordingly and make sure everyone—two-legged and four-legged—has a great experience.
